Health Facts

Not only good tasting but incredibly good for you … in fact, a healthy balanced diet with approximately two servings of onions a week may save your life. Here are some of the many benefits of eating onions.

Heart and circulatory system
Nutritionists believe that a healthy diet rich in onions can help keep blood platelets from clumping. The mild blood-thinning effect may help prevent blood clots, a major cause of heart attacks and stroke, from forming. Onions have been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Onions also contain a compound called allyl propyl disulfied (APDS) that, like certain prescription diabetes drugs, lowers blood sugar. And onions contain a variety of other naturally occurring substances known as organo-sulfur compounds that have been linked to lowering blood and cholesterol levels.

Digestive System
A Dutch study recently showed that a diet rich in onions might help neutralize carcinogens responsible for stomach cancer and act to prevent ulcers by stunting activity of stomach damaging bacteria.

Bones
Researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland concluded that onions might help reduce the risk of osteoporosis – the crippling bone disease that affects people at they grow older. One gram of onion per day can help prevent the loss of calcium from the bones.

Overall Wellness
Research shows that onions may help guard against many chronic diseases. Onions contain a powerful antioxidant called quercetin. Antioxidants are believed to slow aging, fight cataracts, and lower the risk of many types of cancer.

Quercetin has also been shown to relieve asthma, eczema, bug bites, and hay fever by blocking inflammation. It may also be beneficial against inflammatory joint conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Onions have fewer than 30 calories per serving, contain no sodium, fat or cholesterol, and yet provide vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, dietary fiber, and many other healthy nutrients.

Onions keep the body, and therefore the mind, strong. Onions should be a part of every person’s healthy diet.
